Why use compression garments?
Compression garments can aid with reducing swelling, preventing blood clots and assisting with recovery from sport/exercise. Medical grade compression socks may be advised for medical reasons, to treat conditions such as; deep vein thrombosis (blood clots), lymphoedema, pregnancy related edema, aching and swollen legs, varicose veins and associated skin problems.
Compression socks (travel socks) are often worn during long haul flights to also reduce the risk factors for the above conditions, as prolonged sitting can increase your risk of DVT and swelling.
How does compression therapy work?
Compression stockings gently squeeze the veins and muscles of the leg, to assist with returning the blood back to the heart. The compression is often firmest at the ankle and gradually reduces up the leg. This also helps to move fluid up the leg so it doesn’t collect around the ankles.
It is important that you be measured and fitted for your compression stockings by a qualified health professional. The right fit will mean the most comfort and effectiveness.
The Niagara Foot Care Clinic stocks a wide range of OTC strength and prescription strength compression stockings for travel and therapeutic uses.
